Ukraine Has Not Yet Perished

The first time I heard the Ukrainian national anthem, which roughly translates to "Ukraine has not yet Perished," I thought I had mistranslated. Watching the events around EuroMaidan unfold, however, I do not think there could ever be a more perfect title for a country's anthem.

The Information Counter-Revolution

It's a troubling sign that the information age has entered a new era -- one where our rights to connect and communicate are under constant siege by governments and corporations.

The Ukrainian Euro Maidan

Since those first days of violence, there has been little movement on the ground as far as anything resembling a strategy to reaching the goals of Euromaidan.

Ukraine Rolls Back Freedom of Speech

A decade ago, Ukraine decriminalized defamation and was one of the nations with a bright future and a legal environment conducive to free expression and free media. Today that seems like a long time ago.

The Sad Progression of the Ukrainian Protest Movement From Democracy and the Rule of Law to Ultra-nationalism and Anti-semitism

The varied activities of the vast, multi-ethnic crowd on the Square that quickly came to be called Euromaidan celebrated themes of democracy, pluralism and an end to government corruption. However, that uplifting mood began to change in early December.

Repeating the Past: Is EuroMaidan the New Orange, or Something Else?

Ukraine has an extremely active civil society, a successful democratic social movement in very recent memory, and an infrastructure to support the organizing of massive protests. Yanukovych's Ukraine is not Putin's Russia, as much as Yanukovych pretends it is.

Ukraine's Fight Is Europe's Battle

The confrontation in Kiev is the focus. Less discussed, Putin's Kremlin has sought to block closer economic and political ties between the EU and several other states that it dominated during the Soviet Union.

Russia's Second Chance

Let us hope that Sochi will convey a gentler, kinder Russia. And let us wish that the new year will show a different mindset in the Russian leadership, one that puts a premium on the strength of its people, rather than the authority of its president.

Ukraine Is Hungary All Over Again

The Hungarian freedom fighters' only hope in 1956 was help and support from Washington. Like the Ukrainians, they expected that help. However, President Eisenhower and John Foster Dulles had no intention of confronting Russia.

Anti-Corruption Is Marching Ahead

As hundreds of millions of people, many very poor, across most of the world obtain Internet connections, see web-based news that governments find hard to censor, even in China, so the pressures on authorities to attack graft mounts.

Vladimir Putin is Just the Latest Bully in the Thousand Year Struggle for Ukrainian Nationhood

The outcome of the tug of war between the pro-government/pro-Russian forces and the pro-EU/pro-independence forces in Ukraine will have a decisive impact on Eastern Europe's development in the new millennium.

Euromaidan's Organization Shows Passion Is Here to Stay

I hardly expected to be looking forward to seeing John McCain anywhere, much less in Kyiv, Ukraine. Yet here I was last Sunday morning, layering fleece under my jacket and preparing to head down to Euromaidan to hear Senator McCain address the protestors.

In Present Ukrainian Crisis, a Middle Way Must Be Found

At this fateful moment, the moral imperative I wish to convey to people on both sides of this struggle is, 'Please take a deep breath and do everything humanly possible to find a way to resolve this dangerous situation peacefully, before blood flows in earnest.'
Oleksandr Feldman

The Twilight of Leadership

Modern society has become simply too complex for any one person to master. It's one thing to stand firm against an evil system or a dictatorial regime. This may not be an easy task, but it is an easy-to-understand task.

Lenin

Lenin was recently beheaded. Well, his statute. In Kyiv. Too bad, but overdue. Why didn't the Ukrainians do this earlier... say twenty years ago?
